I. NTRODUCTION

Despite the fact that the world is facing the loss and aging of the agricultural population, Taiwan is leading in the industry of information communication technology (ICT) and agricultural technology. The valuable knowledge and experience of the agricultural experts can be preserved thanks to the integration of human intelligence (HI) and artificial intelligence (AI), which also responds to the issues about domestic aging agricultural population and labor shortage. The cross-disciplinary technological integration in the future will facilitate the digital transformation and the refined upgrade of agricultural technology and automation, reshaping and even opening a new era for Taiwan’s agriculture.

Digital Twin Solutions for Smart Farming builds a virtual farm in the digital world, simultaneously recording, reflecting, and simulating the real environment, farmers’ harvests, and crop-growth conditions. Digital Twin Solutions integrates AI that excels in logic (left-brain) and HI experience (right-brain) to build a knowledge model on famers’ agronomic skills and decision-making behaviors with sensors and data models. It improves farmers’ proficiency in “smart monitoring and precise production” and safeguards agricultural experts’ priceless techniques through digitalization. Through Digital Twins Solutions, AI gets to acquire farmers’ knowledge and experience dynamically and therefore greatly enhance the effect of collaborative operation and decision-making optimization.

This competition aims at passing on agricultural and agronomic technologies. By means of digital data collection and grounded on the big data stored in this common information platform, the contest integrates data from various fields to innovate the service technology of digital twin mechanism. This will assist the business owners to build their own technical threshold, strengthen the competitive advantage in expanding Taiwan’s agricultural technology outbound, and shape the image of Taiwan’s smart agriculture across the world. The agricultural experts, through this platform, will lead the students to learn this industry, attract the investment of IT technicians, cultivate the talents in the supply chain of agricultural production and marketing, and amplify the effect of smart agriculture.

II. THEME

Most of the existing agricultural IoT applications revolve around data visualization. How to put forward decision-making suggestions becomes an important topic for smart agriculture system. By means of observing and filtering an expert’s behaviors, “Digital Twin for Agricultural Experts” duplicate the expert’s experience and doings, coming up with useful greenhouse management and operation advice.

Participating teams are required to build an “Expert Behavior Forecast Model.” The model makes use of IoT applications in the greenhouse, such as sensors and actuators, other reference data from Smart Agriculture Common Information Platform, Outdoor Weather Stations and Central Weather Bureau, and crop growth records to forecast expert behaviors.

This competition provides greenhouse data of two crops, namely orchid and beef tomato. The data includes the detailed sensing data recorded in the greenhouse where the crops are grown, the weather station measurement data, long-term data on crop-growth, and the expert’s management data and actuator data in the greenhouse (such as turning on the fan, opening the skylight, and closing the side rolling blinds). The participating teams shall use the data provided to build an orchid model and a beef tomato model separately and execute the environment control forecast.
